Good Morning everyone from Bengaluru, India!!

Nick Eggleston04:05:35

Good evening, night and morning from Indy (Indianapolis, Indiana, USA), Eastern US timezone. Super excited for the conference to start, even though it will be 5am! 😂

Jean Xie04:05:17

is anyone know if each session will be recorded and published into the video libs for re-play purpose along the event? 🙂

Arne Brasseur (CEO - Gaiwan, he/him)06:05:23

Videos should be available in the video library once the event starts.

👍 2
Damian08:05:25

According to #faq, the talk from team at Disney wont be available.

Nick Eggleston20:05:26

And remember, the videos are only for a week (or two?) after the conference ends, unless you buy the upgrade. Is that right, @alex?

Alex Broderick-Forster, IT Revolution, Event Staff22:05:13

@nickeggleston two weeks with unlimited viewing, and then 10 views/month without the upgrade.

I am curious... just how do people find each other and stay in contact once the conference ends? It's super interactive for three days and then mostly tumbleweeds until the next conference. I realize this is most likely a lack of something on my part, but it's hard to know without asking.

I'd love a bot that collects everything with the 🔖 emoji

Nick Eggleston20:05:55

Someone set up a Google Docs document we all can update. Now if I could just find the posting...

Nick Eggleston20:05:30

Also it seems every channel has the LogBot attached, will it gather and process such items? @mvk842

Margueritte Kim (CEO, IT Revolution, she/her)03:05:29

@nickeggleston We use the LogBot to archive Slack messages but let me see if @genek has some ideas!

Margueritte Kim (CEO, IT Revolution, she/her)03:05:18

He has nothing but time on his hands…😉

Gene Kim, ITREV, Program Chair03:05:16

What a great idea! Yes, it’s exactly as you guessed — the logbot pulls all the messages for our Slack Archive, which I’ll post later. It’d be great to be able to query to collect all messages to generate a report, like all books mentioned. Tagging @arne.brasseur @jeff.gallimore Personally, I love idea. I’m Saving so many messages to follow up on, and trying to figure out how to get them somewhere before they get deleted by Slack (free tier)

Arne Brasseur (CEO - Gaiwan, he/him)04:05:22

This is a cool idea, some fun things we can do here. Adding it to my list of ideas to take into the next event. Meanwhile you can already start tagging posts, e.g. if all book references get an 🔖 emoji reaction then we can pull those out later.

Gene Kim, ITREV, Program Chair09:05:42

So, TUI did massive cuts of dozens solutions, replacing with one solution, whilst changing the org structure, skills, process and tech all at the same time. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, but apparently they were successful on this occasion. Would this be a good model for other orgs?

🥲 1
Pieter Jordaan (CTO -TUI Group)14:05:00

I think the point of the talk is that your perspective matters: We moved from a “recipe for disaster” to facing an actual disaster - COVID. This changed our perspective on risk, value, time to market and therefore our approach to transformation. Within the context of an existing COVID disaster our perspective changed, forced a different approach which we indeed might have seen as “recipe for disaster” in the past. I tried to highlight key points which other organisations can adopt. Making such a large scale change helps to break the inevitable dependencies between IT and Business consolidation but indeed require a organisational context that is ready for it. Not having the basics in place is a “recipe for disaster”

Katharine Chajka (Tasktop)10:05:49

#ask-the-speaker-plenary is where the action is right now!

Philipp Böschen, TUI, DevOps Coach, (he/him)10:05:24

when will we get 1080p streams  Or is that just missing for me because of amazing German internet...

Rahul Chautel - Cornerstone OnDemand10:05:28

Seems like an issue all across. I’m watching from India and 720p is max i see which is not impressive

Philipp Böschen, TUI, DevOps Coach, (he/him)10:05:54

@jeff.gallimore is that something that's just limited from the platform side?

Rahul Chautel - Cornerstone OnDemand10:05:44

especially, deck contents are not clearly visible even with 720p which makes it difficult to read and correlate with speaker.

Alex Broderick-Forster, IT Revolution, Event Staff10:05:07

I believe 720p is the max. @philipp.boeschen650 @rchautel To take advantage of 1080p we’d need a live camera setup with each presenter. Otherwise we’re maxed out by webcams anyways.

Philipp Böschen, TUI, DevOps Coach, (he/him)10:05:08

Mhmm, it'd definitely help if the slides where sharp though, I'm starting to develop a bit of a headache from the slight blurry bits

Alex Broderick-Forster, IT Revolution, Event Staff10:05:54

I forced 720p on mine (instead of auto) and after 5 seconds it got WAY clearer.

Philipp Böschen, TUI, DevOps Coach, (he/him)10:05:21

Will try! Thanks that looks way better than on my side

Andre Baumeier10:05:58

720p here as well. for some slides not good enough..

AlignedDev (Omnitech Engineer)15:05:50

Donvan Brown says "DevOps is the union of people, process, and products to enable continuous delivery of value to our end users." and I think that is pretty good https://www.donovanbrown.com/post/what-is-devops

Jeff Gallimore (CTIO - Excella)15:05:49

The best definition I’ve heard is the one coined by @jonathansmart1 that identifies the outcomes you want/get: Better. Value. Sooner. Safer. Happier. BVSSH

Miguel Angel Martínez Espichan15:05:36

Hello, we are implementing DevOps in a company and we are refining the way we measure our mature. Do you have any way to measure mature, or any reference such us Puppet Report o DORA?, in order to have a same measure of mature?

👀 2
Jeff Gallimore (CTIO - Excella)15:05:52

@mmartinezespichan my opinion: you’re on the right track with DORA and reading the Accelerate book. There’s also discussion in there around maturity models (no) versus capability models (yes). and also my opinion, if you’re moving the Big Four metrics in the right direction (deployment frequency, lead time for changes, MTTR, and change fail rate), you’re doing the right things.

👍 2
Jeff Gallimore (CTIO - Excella)15:05:38

one more point: be cautious about using a “one-size-fits-all” approach with the teams. that isn’t usually best because each team is different and context is important. allow (some) freedom and autonomy to chart their own course.

👍 3
Adrienne Shulman16:05:49

Adrienne Shulman12:05:27

I like it because it's multi dimensional across tooling, processes, people, culture. Devops maturity is not a single straight path, and the crawl/walk/run emphasizes the journey not the destination

Dmitry Luchnik /// adidas Data Analytics architect12:05:07

I would second Jeff - staring with 4 KPIs from Accelerate is a right thing to do. They are very self-explainable and measurable (fact based). You can implement something like the chart I was showing with 1-2 sprints. CALMS gives more metrics and also shows what directions the teams might look into (what questions to ask)

Steve Smith21:05:44

I agree with Jeff 100%, and would strongly advise against maturity models. Particularly if a) they're not homegrown and b) teams aren't empowered to evolve such models themselves. My sense from the (excellent) Adidas talk yesterday was a) and b) are not problems

Sascha Schärich (DevOps Evangelist at Deutsche Telekom IT)16:05:27

I haven't watched all the sessions I want to yet, but for anyone who's followed the Adidas Journey watching their growth, progress, and goals for what's next is amazing. You can see them pulling away from earlier years and just launching into the future now

Now I have FOMO for that Lean Coffee session... any good notes you can share?

Steve Pereira - Visible Value Stream Consulting21:05:47

:] There are shots of the lean coffee canvasses in #lean-coffee, with a few epiphanies we noted

Steve Pereira - Visible Value Stream Consulting21:05:01

One big one for us was the value of treating everything (including enabling teams and platforms) as a product with a clear customer and flow of work

Cool. So much to read and learn. 🙂

RJ - Ways of Working, Nationwide UK08:05:53

We have c30 colleagues attending this year from Nationwide Building Society. The conversations (that carried on well into the evening and our ongoing now!) on our in-house DOES21 Teams channel show just how much all the content is valued from the group. I would highlight, again, that the quality, positivity, openness and vulnerability across the set of talks I've been able to squeeze into my day, lunch and evening have all (as ever!) blown me away ❤️

@richard.james you and your team are sterling examples of "you get out what you put in"! Thanks for being such excellent contributors to this community!

"don't be a donut, be a croissant" -- @jeff.gallimore wow, are other tech communities this inclusive? I dont think so. I'm giving a talk tomorrow about the surprising synergies we discovered (at my org Cornerstone) between Diversity & Inclusion and Devops...It devolves into a love letter to our industry. hope to see some of you there

@ashulman i have never found a community quite like this anywhere in my career. it’s just so… human. and amazing. i couldn’t imagine it not existing or not being a part of it.

Leaving the possibility open, there may be a more advanced and welcoming community. This tends to be very inclusive.

Adrienne Shulman18:05:55

I feel the same, and it seems like many others do to. I'm just kicking myself for not discovering it sooner.

Adrienne Shulman18:05:23

Ah yes, we should always leave possibilities open 🌈 @ferrix

Ferrix Hovi - Principal Engineering Avocado - SOK (S Group)18:05:16

What are you gaining by the kicks? People take their time with ideas, even their own idead. That includes you and me. So, self-compassion is important.

Adrienne Shulman18:05:59

@jeff.gallimore There are other communities that optimize safety/humanity. But to find one that optimizes for better value AND better humanity? It's like living in a dream

❤️ 1
Adrienne Shulman18:05:51

@ferrix agreed, you are right! celebrate the journey and progress, not the destination

🙌 2
Jeff Gallimore (CTIO - Excella)18:05:59

@ashulman so much yes to the “and”! and the amazing thing about that is that this community also realizes you can get both together… and in fact need to pursue both to win. no tradeoffs here!

I love how consciously and deliberately inclusive and psychologically aware this conference is and how the team is always striving for improvement.

I had another thought about this... currently the metaphor is expressed in terms of space... leave a gap where someone new can join... but I think it applies as well in time... leave a space (some silence) so that new people can be heard... and whomever seems to have the spotlight can ask those who have been quiet if they have questions from time to time (@jonathansmart1 is very good at this).

Nick Eggleston00:05:24

With the delays inherent in these meeting platforms, there's often collisions at the end of one person's utterances as those who want to reply talk at the same time.... CSMA-CD indeed... i love networking.

Adrienne Shulman00:05:21

@bryan.finster486 did a good job of this as a facilitator for lean coffee earlier today, I was running my loud mouth (i can be a DEI advocate and still make mistakes) and he was really intentional and good about making sure everyone participated.

Ivan Krnic (Director of Engineering at CROZ)19:05:11

What a packed day... unwinding with a 🍺 and catching up on all the great talks that I didn't get to see today. I guess you people are not downstairs in the hotel bar?

🍻 2
Nick Eggleston21:05:47

There is a "bar" in Gather Town, and it's open all night. We should try and get some attention so people some hang out and talk after the official items are done for the day.

I was just sent this by one of the developers my team at Walmart mentored. so i was able to apply dev ops principles to dishes. So far in 2021 the dishes haven’t piled up once 💪 the trick was to run the dishwasher as a predefined interval (for me thats daily) no matter how many dishes there were. Before doing it like this i would wait to do this dishes until we had a full load of dishes but now i run it every night no matter what and normally that means its only like a third full. Youd think whats the difference between doing 1/3 loads every day vs 1 full load every 3 days - its got to be the same right? This is where devops comes in. frequent small deploys to the dishwasher actually makes it easier to keep up with the dishes overall. You dont have to take time playing tetris with the dishes when you arent filling it up all the way, dishes dont have as much time to get stuff stuck to them, the emotional burden of loading/emptying is way lower when there are less dishes to work with, and it quickly becomes a habit.

After reading this, I've spent a fair amount of my evening cleaning my apartment. 🙂

Ferrix Hovi - Principal Engineering Avocado - SOK (S Group)03:05:24

Fun fact: unlike Tetris, the dishes do not disappear when you fill a row.
