Hello 👋 from Berlin, Germany. Gaiwan is ITRevolution's technical partner to help make sure we all have a superb event!

Nick Eggleston17:10:49

What aspects of the conference are your folks responsible for @arne.brasseur ?

Arne Brasseur (CEO - Gaiwan, he/him)17:10:35

We developed the conference platform that you are all using to watch the talks, the video library for after the conference, a custom video editing toolchain to help with production, and the slack archive site.

Nick Eggleston12:10:58

Oooh 😊 where can we make suggestions? For example: sorting the video list by original broadcast order, filtering out videos previously watched, keeping track of how much of each video we’ve seen, so we can pick up where we were before being interrupted etc?

Jeff Gallimore (CTIO - Excella)14:10:32

If anyone would like to share - what has been/is their most effective way to upskill or re-skill?

👀 1
Chrystina Nguyen, Rhythmic Technologies15:10:00

Audiobooks have been very helpful for me to sharpen my skills. I am in sales, so not sure if that is applicable to your question.

John M15:10:52

Thank you - it is an option for technology workers also...learning as I have experienced is multi-dimensional and not a one size fits all...

Matt Badgley, BluHound Solutions15:10:26

Love @cnguyen suggestion on Audiobooks -- great for connecting to new ideas. Also, I've been finding selective and orthogonal online training to be helpful. Selective = lot's of critical shopping and Orthogonal = taking courses that may not be directly related to what I do, get's me out of my comfort zone.

Don Almeida15:10:21

I use linked learning to up the skill of my team… it's immediate and applicable. I also make it part of the Retrospective.

Chrystina Nguyen, Rhythmic Technologies15:10:23

Great suggestions @matt075 I know my company is offering benefits from MasterClass. Personally, i did enjoy the platform of ACloudGuru when aiming to get my AWS Cloud Practioner cert

Denee (de-NAY) Ferguson - Director, Technology - Capital One (Speaker)15:10:43

Linked In Learning and ACloudGuru have been very helpful

Chrystina Nguyen, Rhythmic Technologies15:10:19

Have people used social-learning micro-learning, coaching/mentoring/assessments, etc..

As much as I enjoy the ebooks available, I find my physical books have more notes and dog-ears and overall use than any of my ebooks in the ITRev Library. Is anybody giving away any physical books? 😃 cc @alex

👏 3
Patrick S. Kelso18:10:00

I'm a consultant and back in the before times when travel was a thing half my suitcase would be IT Revolution books to give to prospective customers. Stapled inside would be my business card and a note "When you want to do this give me a call". It worked surprisingly well.

❤️ 7
Margueritte Kim (CEO, IT Revolution, she/her)18:10:18

We love giving away books of all kinds too, but shipping 1000+ physical copies is unfortunately too cost and labor prohibitive. We promise that once we’re back to in person conferences, we will be back to sharing books that you can dog-ear to your heart’s content!

❤️ 7
BMK-SECTION6-TransformationArchitect18:10:47

@mvk842 - Including the backlogs 🙂

Margueritte Kim (CEO, IT Revolution, she/her)19:10:56

@lbmkrishna, As with so many things, there is a major supply chain issue in the book printing industry. We have even considered purchasing and storing paper in advance! So, when the time comes, much of what we will be able to offer will depend upon the stock available what we’re able to source.

🙏 2
Leah Brown - IT Revolution19:10:35

Book books and more books!! You know we'll do our best to fill your suitcases just as soon as we're able. 📚

Addendum to Gene’s Love Letter to Conferences I met @steveelsewhere last year at DOES 2020 when he was facilitating a #lean-coffee session on value stream mapping. I asked him whether there were any books on VSM that he thought were really actionable for IT people. He indicated that he felt like there was a gap. Fast forward to DOES 2021, he and I just announced a book on VSM, flow engineering, and how to bridge across middle management and presented a talk here. Super grateful for the DOES community, and to have found Steve as a co-conspirator. Stay in touch with us at https://inside-out.work

It’s been an absolutely wild ride, all the way back to my first DOES in 2014. I knew then that I wanted to be deeply involved with this community and it’s brought me so much insight, learning, and camaraderie ever since - here’s to the next year and beyond! Remember to connect with everyone you can here, you never know who you’ll be working with in a year!

I have so many channels and DMs 'starred' in the DOES Slack, that I need a 'double star' feature 🙂

What the actual difference between a Lean-coffee chat and a BOF chat?

1
Jeff Gallimore (CTIO - Excella)21:10:59

i’d love to hear other opinions on this… from my perspective, the most notable difference is the level of structure for the conversation. for lean coffee, it’s a little more structured and actively managed by the group (and a facilitator). for birds of a feather, the conversation sort of flows wherever the group wants to take it. here are a couple of resources to learn more. https://devopsdays.org/open-space-format/ (similar) https://leancoffee.org/ the best way to see the differences is to participate in them 😉

Tish21:10:43

Interesting... from the descriptions I would have guessed the reverse.

Jerreck22:10:56

lean coffee you build an agenda then talk and BoF you just talk extemporaneously about a particular topic. i personally prefer the BoF chats

Tish13:10:30

Interesting. So far I've only attended the BoF chats... and I have enjoyed them every time.

Personally I'm loving A Deadly Education by Naomi Novak. Her first book in a new series. Think a more sophisticated Harry Potter but the magical school is trying to kill you!

Tom Wojtusik (Tasktop)21:10:24

I'm enjoying The Scout Mindset (Why Some People See Things Clearly and Others Don't), by Julia Galef.

Vivek21:10:13

Currently reading “Driving DevOps with Value Stream Management”. Very interesting. Comprehensively brings together a lot of related concepts for VSM …

Chrystina Nguyen, Rhythmic Technologies21:10:26

Never Split the Difference.. such a good listen so far!

Keith Sanderlin - SRE in Texas, U.S.A.21:10:15

Fall (or Dodge in Hell) by Neal Stephenson. mind blown

Don Almeida22:10:10

Outward mindset. Great read!!!

Jerreck22:10:28

I'm about halfway through Toyota Kata by Mike Rother and it's changed the way I think about continuous improvement and basically a large chunk of lean principles in general. Audiobook isn't bad but having the physical copy for the graphics really help. Also about halfway through Engineering The Digital Transformation by Gary Gruver. Pretty confident this one's going to become my new recommended how-to guide for engineering management.
