"20% of features are canceled after code has been written — so demoralizing to me"
"35% of products have zero capacity for new work for 12+ months" (!!)
Holy cow — the work to enable decentralized execution in Gource source code viz tool.
"Demand is disconnected from capacity". Not surprising, but still amazing to quantify. Visibility is power!
Showing the investment need to achieve the desired properties of high cohesion and low coupling.
"20% features cancelled after the code has been written." The value of skilling up in product discovery techniques...
It's also been said that the difference between coupling and cohesion is whether you like where the boundary is.
Splitting out product and engineering is a polar shift away from common patterns - this is going to be fascinating to dig into
Mik's talk emphasizes for me that we have left software methodology behind a long time ago. We are in full blown operating model conversations. I'm still wrapping my head around the implications.
Agree, it’s business agility. Our business. Not ‘the business’ Minimising ‘jargon’
@mik The 8% agile team planned work being canceled - Great stats! - Where was the source again/what was the sample group?
PS: You'll see another example of @chawklady network brought to bear tomorrow!
My LinkedIn connections are mostly DOES :) or from DOES cc @genek
@chawklady talking on how important one's boss is and need for value match — or as Dr. @ronwestrum (who is here, and has already been talking with many of you!) taught me about "Rubinow's Law #23: if you have a dope at the top, you will have, or soon will have, dopes all the way down."
Couldn’t agree with @chawklady more. DOES community truly is the best !! Y’all have helped me so much.
"True colors surface when things aren't going well" 🔥
Value stream mapping and Wardley mapping are indicators of generative, high performing teams 🙌
Great question: How do you leverage outside help?
I don't allow human error as a root cause - there's always a systemic reason for that error.
@ckissler dropping all kinds of truth bombs in this talk.
Consultants: the solution when the outcome of the hiring process is that it's impossible to process new hires :i_love_you_hand_sign:
When economic clouds turn dark, prioritize investing in yourself. Always be learning. Great talk, @chawklady.
Sent some pics to my team @chawklady, hope they don’t change companies or leaders ;)
Heard some of these facts for first time today — this is so amazing! eBay v2: hitting compiler limits of 16K methods per class in C++ DLL!!!
I learned from @rshoup that he got these Amazon stories from James Hamilton, Amazon CTO, last week! Excited beyond words on these details!
Restarting every 100-200 requests :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing: oh my !
(Was thinking of @scott.prugh telling me about AIX boxes that took 8 hours to finish rebooting — can't imagine how intolerable this would have been if reboots were required ever 100-200 requests!!! 😆 )
YES!!! Cognitive load is so crucial! It must be considered!
Seems like this conference’s common theme is common/shared platform/capabilities
"Governance ---> Enablement". (First words fraught with ideas that aren't intended.)
IMHO there is no well architecture guidance in general in typical Enterprise:( ( non- tech companies)
"strictly better" (that seems like a very precise term — what is the definition?). @rshoup
Randy just described the EARB!! https://scaledagiledevops.com/roles/#enterprise-architecture-review-board-earb SADMF FTW
If that team's service does not give me 100% of the data and functionality I need, I'm writing my own or working with another team! Oh crap, I'm the problem!
The bar for “Understand the overall system” keeps getting higher and higher 😬
Starting architecture improvement via Value Stream Mapping 😍
This is the most I’ve heard Value Stream Mapping of any year at DOES - seems like at least half of the sessions I’ve attended mention it directly (of course I’m biasing the sample pool 🙃)
“It's five fourty one pm… do you know where your DevOps transformation is?”
Are you not singing @fcornago?! :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:
Now I got a song link that I could share with leadership team when they say Reorg :) Thank you @forrestbrazeal
@lbmkrishna we got a song and if that doesn't work, we got a new resume
