I am ridiculously excited for the start of DOES tomorrow! Iโm all caught up on the Idealcast, will finish reading Team of Teams today, just recorded a podcast with @ds that will go up Wednesday on From Taylor to Toyota that talks about the dynamics that come from learning at the edges of an organization (inspired by @steve773โs Donโt Be a Zombie Organization). I remember meeting @bryan.finster and others in the bar last Las Vegas on Monday night. Iโll miss that in person experience, and at the same time looking forward to hanging out in #happy-hour and chatting with others of the DOES tribe!
I'm reading Team of Teams as well at the moment. I like it, but at the same team I'm asking myself whether I or my colleagues are as determined / qualified as the SEALS ;) What do you think?
Only you can answer that question for yourself @roman! ๐ I will say the book does a brilliant job in Chapter 5 From Command to Team of making the point that what makes the SEALs what they are is that the are a super team, not super soldiers: The people who leave could meet the challenges; they just realize they donโt wanโt to. Since youโre here, Iโm guessing you want to. What do you think? ๐
Just had the thought that @david627 and @jessica.reif probably encounter that question a lotโฆ
So there's a self-selection bias of people that really want to. Not sure that's the case everywhere looking at average engagement scores :)
Well, that's why employee engagement is one of the most important metrics I guess...
I guess someone will post the NUMMI case study soon ;)
Now youโre up to Chapter 9 Beating the Prisonerโs Dilemma : โThe two major determinants of idea flow โฆ are โengagementโ within a small group like a team, a department, or a neighborhood, and โexplorationโโfrequent contact with other units.โ
Selection bias is huge. The people who show up for DOES are people who have above average engagement.
The good news is that engagement can be cultivated, it is a dynamic that is impacted by the structures we put in place. cc / @genek101
I'm in chapter 5 now. So I guess I'll try to find some time today and come back
Oh.. the structures .. yeah that's a huge part. Good or bad
Now watching your "frustrated? It is probably your fault" talk
For those that don't know what podcast @jtf is talking about, it his and @ds "Troubleshooting Agile" show. https://www.conversationaltransformation.com/troubleshooting-agile-podcast/
@chris.gallivan: not officiallyโฆ however there are some of us in #happy-hour . ๐
Isn't there some old adage about it always being #happy-hour somewhere? ๐
And @jtf - "Last Las Vegas" would make a great tag for this event.
We can add that to our bingo card in progress! (see thread in #happy-hour )
I'm looking forward to my first DOES tomorrow. I've heard lots of great things about the conference and am excited to attend!
Hello, everyone! Holy cow, Iโm so much looking forward to the start of the conference tomorrow! As of now, Iโve watched all the plenary sessions (I.e., keynote sessions, general sessions) at least twice โย some of them, many more times! The talks are all SO, SO, SO GOOD!!! Canโt wait to have yโall see what weโve put together for you! In the meantime, can you do me a favor? Change your profile so that your affiliation, role, etc. is in your display name โย it will help everyone connect quicker/faster with each other, ideally enabling those awesome, mutually exothermic interactions! THANK YOU!!! ๐๐๐๐๐๐
Done. All those 40 hour days and endless months to get here. Congratulations! Can't wait for us to all be back at the Cosmopolitan in Vegas. Until then onto another successful virtual conference. If London was any indication, we have a lot to look forward to.
Follow the speakers on Twitter here! https://twitter.com/i/lists/199059011?s=20
First happy hour done. Oh boy, this is gonna take all night every night and while I am not prepared, I am excited. There's some bread waiting for the oven and there's lots of conversations to be had and I hope I don't fall asleep before seeing at least the plenary sessions.
alcohol stocked up to make up for all the missed drinking sessions
I started with tea and it may as well be the way I go on. We'll see
yesterday was a bummer. i started with beer and ran out after the first one. had to make do with soda by the end of it.
๐ The American Airlines team is pumped to make day 1 amazing. We promise 3 thingsโฆ premium content from our leadership team, airline puns and to giveaway 100K AAdvantage miles. Your event boarding pass will be posted in our channel! #bof-american-airlines
I'm just glad that you aren't just winging it... #airlinepuns will you be giving out virtual snacks? Do platinum members get upgraded to secret slack channels? :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:
we're out here just trying to keep it business classy ๐
๐ This is my first DOES and Iโm stoked! Any advice on how to make the best out of this virtual format?
Ask a question at every event. The presenters are looking for a signal that their content is hitting home and you can turn up the energy of the whole room just by asking questions! Also, coffee.
Find interesting people to talk to and talk to them. Start conversations. Happy hour.
Mention @genek101 in everything and... :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing: Seriously - engage as much as you can. Ask that question, offer that commentary, share that insight, encourage that conversation - we are all better when everyone does.
Hey @adam - thatโs my first DOES too. Letโs stick together as all freshmen do :)
Divide and conquer. Schedule out the ones you most want to go. Spend time in the various channels, lots of fun networking and also speaker tracks to engage them while their sessions are going on are a must.
Awesome information here! I'm a newbie to DOES and to virtual events. I'm looking forward to it! Thanks for sharing all the feedback!
And usually most important and easy to miss when you look at the program listing be sure to update it to your time zone on the right. The default setting is pacific. When it's the London event the default time is London time.
Be ready to collect URLs from the chat for reading later.
Is anyone else seeing a message that keeps appearing and disappearing on this channel?
@robert.cuddy yes ๐ thatโs me. iโm setting the reminders for the next three days and slack is being helpful by telling everyone iโm setting the reminders. just didnโt want to clutter the channel up.
GโDay! Super looking forward to the sleepless nights ๐ฅณ
Thank you Jeff - no worries, just wanted to make sure it was valid. Going to be great.
@genek101 Excited to see the sessions. DevOps has never been more important to companies around the world.
