Looking forward to this after London. Starts at midnight for those of us on the bottom of the world, but it'll be worth it.
Super excited for the summit over next few days!! Jumping on the virtual plane now and looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! :flag-ac:
I like the idea of hopping on a virtual plane, from Vancouver! 🙂 As much as the remote conference offers the flexibility to attend from wherever we are, it also means I cannot shirk my home responsibilities! Need to work around kid's school drop-off and pick-ups etc.. At least I have my own monastery in the basement to try and get as much out of this conference! :flag-ca:
I have the most basic questions, but while I was making my schedule, I realized I don't know where the links are to the actual streams so I can watch. Am I missing something obvious?
The streams will appear on the site when things are starting. The recordings will be appearing somewhere else at the end of each day.
The flights may be virtual but the jetlag will be real.
Join a panel discussion around building the future of work fully remotely and learn about implementing remote-first practices in a rapidly growing global organization. Panelist: GitLab Inc. Darren Murph, Head of Remote, and Eficode, Irinahttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAAAFb0L0BwseCW4YTBgsTvEhJmboM0SNf7aoNorström, Head of People Operations, and Heikki Hämäläinen, Head of Growth. https://www.eficode.com/events/webinar-scale-remote-first-and-succeed
Can’t signup, since I’m between gigs and using my gmail right now. 😢
@nickeggleston - Now the personal gmail should work. Could you please try again :)
See everyone tomorrow morning. Conferences starts at 05:30 for me. Anyone else in Hawaii? :beach_with_umbrella:
High cost of living and not that much to do compared to other metropolitan areas. Any work is going to be remote but that was always assumed for me. Also not that many software professionals around that I can find. Example: you’ll only find an active JS meetup on http://meetup.com
That's amazing! Many of us dream on living there and though I imagine island life isn't for everyone. I don't know how easy it easy to island hop for activities all day and head back home in the night. Visiting the mountain that opens Raiders of the Lost Ark one day or the night-time fun at Mauna Kea Observatories. Just taking in sunset on the beach there regularly would be something special. Cost of living is generally what I hear is the worst there.
It would be very cool to experience the tropical paradise life (without the high costs!) in practice, I fear I’d likely spend most of my time working from home and not out enjoying the natural wonders 😂
CoL same ball park as California and some of other big tech areas; just without all the big tech.
I’ve travelled the world and lived in my places. This is the best place in the USA for me. I can’t imagine living anywhere else in states. I’ve been here for just over a year now.
partially; more like recurring permanent resident. I’ve lived in Finland, Germany, Sweden, then India, and nomaded through south east asia for a few years before returning back to the states
What were the best parts of each country?
The conference link isn't showing on https://doesvirtual.com/ for me. When does it go live?
Hi Alyssa! The conference starts at 8:30 a.m. PST. All the programming will be released as they air during the conference.
The AMAs with the speakers, however, will be here in Slack during the talks, so that’s your chance to ask presenters questions in real time.
@mvk842...can we view sessions that have already happened, or do we have to wait until the they happen in our respective time zones? I'm on EST
Hi @spencer_hale - All presentations are pre-recorded but will be released after they air.
They'll air in real-time (PT) and according to the schedule.
how many have paid their own way this year when the company wouldn't pay?
I paid my own way to both London and Vegas this year. (Former) company did pay for Vegas previous year.
I said "candyman" three times in a row and the live conference appeared.
The times on the main page are PDT
^was late on the draw. Didn’t realize there had already been responses. ☺️
hey all. first time DOES attendee here.. Does anyone know how long is the content available for download/later viewing? Thanks.
hey all. first time DOES attendee here.. Does anyone know how long is the content available for download/later viewing? Thanks.
Is that right? I read somewhere it would be only a week or so that the talks would be viewable after the event.
@nickeggleston as part of your registration, each attendee gets personal access to the video library for seven days. if you want to share more with others or access for longer, we’ve created some options for that.
@pavan.kristipati @nickeggleston the slides (not the videos) will be available on github indefinitely
Thanks @jonathansmart1, any idea when they will roll over to YouTube?
@pavan.kristipati I am not authoritative but it looks like they archive many on YT https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkyYEVVmT9vQ4yPBR4ciFUA
Thank you @shawnmdawson but I assume that YouTube Channel would have only a few videos..I am hoping there is a way we could view all of them later.
Yes, @pavan.kristipati - As a registered conference delegate, you will have access to the recorded talks after the conference. The talks will be made available as they air throughout the conference.
Thank you @mvk842 I see you mention “recorded talks” are accessible after the conference. Is there a way to know which talks are “recorded talks”?
All sessions are pre-recorded with the exception of VendorDome and networking (birds of a feather, lean coffee) sessions.
Are the sessions that have already happened in PST available to view...if so, where?
https://everytimezone.com/ is the timezone finder that I use.
Ahhhhh...gotcha!! Thanks Ben, Jack, and Neil!
On the program page listing be sure to update it to your time zone on the right. Otherwise it defaults to pacific time.
Could some one please post the link to the conference here. This link https://doesvirtual.com/ is NOT working for me.
https://devopsenterprisesummitlasve.sched.com/?timezone=America%2FKentucky%2FLouisville
You may have to change the time zone. That is the schedule link.
@spencer_hale https://devopsenterprisesummitlasve.sched.com/?iframe=no works for me. It takes to the schedule page..
It's a bit odd alright. "When the conference starts, navigation will be added to this page."
https://doesvirtual.com/ - When you are signed in. The curtain goes down in a few hours. Until then we have Slack and toast from @jtf
No worries. More time for coffee and meeting others in Slack.
I wonder if the conference link can go "live" with a message that says streaming begins at XYZ time. Clearly many people are thinking it should be live already. :-) Fun with communication (communication is what the listener does, not what the speaker does).
Yes, an automated count-down could be cool. I think there's a lot more time-zone confusion during virtual conferences
Is the username+password for
the same email+password I used to sign up? It doesn't seem to like the +
in the email address I gave it?
It's different. Follow the instructions in the email to (re)set your password.
@john.hoffler I was under the impression the conference started in 10 minutes. Then I realized my timezone was set to PDT while I am CDT. Rookie mistake:sweat_smile:
I feel that! So many conferences you start out your schedule planning only to realize what was listed is in an unexpected time zone.
I'm out of North Carolina and it runs until almost 9 pm my time. I'm going to need more than one cup I think, lol
Good morning/bonjour from Canada east coast
Good morning! The conference will begin in 1 hour, 50 minutes at 8:30a PT
Good morning. London Calling, as they say...
Indianapolis checking in...
new role for me...building out a devops/sre team....in theory
Greetings from Minneapolis Going to be 61 today for a nice Fall day
Good morning from Fiji, no I mean Barcelona, well actually in North Carolina. One can dream. This virtual event is no small task so bravo to the team and especially the cool platform that powers it from @patrick.debois256 We are here with team DZone this year including @alireza.chegini (send them all your KFC), @laurenh (seeking podcasters), @sparks.shawn (loves hearing your DevOps stories), @siddharth.pareek (SRK of DevOps), and more.
Chapel Hill is an amazing area! I'm out there this weekend. I moved to NC from Texas and loving the area.
I am a fan of CH. Lived there for about a decade. Made the slow creep out through Durham, and now in Raleigh
@laurenh 👋:skin-tone-3: I’m a podcaster
I'm in Downtown Durham. Never a dull moment here. I'm out in Chapel Hill for their film fest, only Chase bank in the entire area (they are building one now by Duke East) and only go to Raleigh for the bars and Alamo Drafthouse.
@adam Would love to pick your brain about podcasts and this industry if you have time!
@laurenh of course. Just ping me whenever 🙂
Oregon! Welcome (from Portland:slightly_smiling_face:).
Good morning from St Louis!
One of my favorite countries! Ich habe in Salzburg studiert. Prost!
Nice! Was hast du dort studiert? (What did you study there)?
Political Science, communications und Deutsch, aber, ich habe viel vergessen!
Cool. I thought about studying communications in Salzburg back then, but decided to stay in Vienna (and studied business administration and sw engineering)
Good morning from DFW! Missing Vegas this morning but we're having our first autumn day, so no complaints here!
I am down the road in Austin...Very happy to have a day not expected to hit in the 90s
How's everything going in Dallas? I miss the Texas BBQ and Tex-Mex
We have a fine brisk day…welcome to change to the reoccurring heat. Time for you to come back to Texas???? Who can ever do without BBQ and TexMex!
I miss the Green Tavern (I think that was the name) on 4th. Been about 10 years…
Good morning from the middle of the pacific ocean in Hawaii 🤙:skin-tone-3:
Is there a description of the tracks somewhere? I am jumping between tracks but am interested in how they are grouped.
Good morning from Minnesota!
Morning! You regularly pop up on my twitter timeline, so either you work for VMware or we follow the same people 🙂
Ah, makes sense. Twitter is like seeing celebrities IRL - you feel like you know the person but have to remind yourself that you’re actually a complete stranger ;)
Had a big fan moment last weekend while listening to an audiobook by one of my favorite authors. Loved one of the scenes in his latest book and sent him a note on twitter. He responded! I was floored and so excited 🙂
I feel like I know @nicolefv from listening to her narrating the audio version of Accelerate - while driving, mowing the lawn, getting ready in the morning, falling asleep at night - strangely intimate 😉
now imagine if you will, how it must feel when the person who narrates a book you’re listening to is also your neighbor. Then take it up a notch when that book is a fantasy (mermaids) “romance” novel. 😂 And for clarification. I was only listening to support her and provide feedback as a seasoned consumer.
LOL. The best part was telling her husband - “You wouldn’t believe what Stef said to me yesterday.” LOL
Good morning from Northern Virginia!
Good morning from Iowa!
Good morning from Omaha, NE (raised in Iowa, just a river away now) - bright blue skies and beautiful falling leaves here today.
@jenkins.sheila good morning fellow Iowan! 👋
Good morning from Blacksburg, VA, USA... blue skies here after 3 days of rain.
so is there a channel per talk or something like that?
Yes! The channels correspond with the Tracks on the WATCH page. Speakers will be available for Q&A on Slack while their presentation airs.
Good morning from Indianapolis, Indiana - lovely fall morning here
Must be a small company to be based in Bentonville, AR... 😛
Good morning from CA! So excited to be here! I CANNOT WAIT!
Good morning from DC, but moving to the Denver area in 2 weeks 🙂
Nice...my home town...
I did my graduate work at UAH 🙂 small world
Fantastic! I live in Madison now.. moved down here from St. Louis in ’97. Bob Jones alum?
i was only there thru elementary school, but many great memories of Madison...West Madison Elementary...but very familiar with Bob Jones, Hughes Road, and Old Madison Pike
Madison is completely different now...last time I was there barely recognizable...
@shawn.hisaw yes, it has grown tremendously in the last 20 years, and has nearly completely merged with Huntsville, and it won’t be long before it merges with Athens and Decatur
@joemoretti Agreed...I have family in Athens and you are right...its spreading quickly...kind of sad, but inevitable...I remember when Madison smelled like cotton and there were cotton fields as far as the eye could see...
My Grandfather built the second house on the right on Anderson Circle...with his own 2 hands...almost 70 years ago...planted the 2 oaks that still stand there today
Oh wow! That is awesome! Thats one of the neat things about this area. It’s small enough to have such vivid history and families to share those stories, but also growing fast to have so many comforts of modern cities.
great chatting with you...hope you enjoy the conference...all the best to you and yours
Hello, everyone! Looking forward to getting started in about 40 minutes — I’m super-stoked about the amazing program we’ve put together for you! In the meantime, I have a request: can you make sure your Slack profile has some information about you, to better enable amazing, mutually exothermic interactions? THANK YOU! https://devopsenterprise.slack.com/archives/CATJP0R0X/p1602526165212600
Good morning from California - and it is awesome to have a West-Coast time zone friendly conference.
Welcome! We at DZone are also out of the Triangle area of NC. Good to see someone else from the area here.
Of course, this time last year part of the fun was seeing all my East Coast friends that had their body clocks wake them around 4 am. 😂
Afternoon from London. We can’t be in Las Vegas physically, but I'm there spiritually
Afternoon from London. We can’t be in Las Vegas physically, but I'm there spiritually
Reminder: Hey, everybody! Let us know where you are while you’re attending the DevOps Enterprise Summit. Add your emoji flags to this message.
Hello from Phoenix! Just doing a sound check. Is there music or anything playing along with the slides going now? I dont hear anything
No audio — we were just talking “back stage” about how we should add some, to get earlier indicator that sound actually works. 🙂
Good morning from soggy Summit NJ!
Where's my beer? Damn it. Ok ready, now. You may start any time.
Bob, I grew up in NE Nebraska. Great state!!! Now in FLorida past 25 yrs. :)
I’ve been to every DOES, it’s come a long way from 300 folks at the airport hotel in SF ;-)
That seems so long @cyanko - as someone who has also been to every DOES, it's great to connect!
I have been to all of them as well including the days they were the Electric Cloud (RIP) user conference
Indeed Steve, I think year one was where we met over some twitter trolling ;-)
hello from Seattle
Good morning everyone. Looking forward to a great day!
Reminder: <!here> Get yourself in front of your browser for the opening remarks. We’re kicking off Day 1 of the DevOps Enterprise Summit in 15 minutes! https://devopsenterprise.slack.com/files/UATE4LJ94/F01D34MC2KS/image.png
Good morning everyone from Toronto! Really excited to talk value streams later at lean coffee!
Good morning from Medellín, Colombia. My fourth DOES, but my first time as speaker 😄
Hi Jared - make sure you're logged into the conference platform and go to the WATCH page.
The link helped I’m there now. I was on the scheduler which did not show the watch.
I'm on the Watch Page but when I click login, it does nothing but redirect me back to the page. There's no error message.
@jeff.gallimore I’m starting to think the type of engineers here prefer to send asynchronous flags and details than use a single threaded emoji hub 😉
async >> sync for sure. but it makes for a nice memento for program staff to see all the flags lit up 🙂
12 minutes to start of program. Everyone in the backstage production launch room oddly calm, especially compared to June. (@patrick.debois256 @jessicam @jeff.gallimore @erin) No blockers. Condition: Green. Wish us luck on a smooth start, everyone!!! 🙂
so far I don't see any thread police @bryan.finster @james.simon1
https://twitter.com/RealGeneKim/status/1314972443790897154 Wise words from @patrick.debois256: “Take any problems before going live seriously — don’t dismiss them as a one-off that will never happen again. Those are what tend to blow up when you’re live.”
Oh Gene, I’m an old school DBA… that means I write the same script ~100 times before I finally save it for reuse.
The password reset email is taking for ever, I just registered today and email notifications are taking a lot of time
Anyone else having issues watching? I tried to login to Sched and it just loops me back around and asks me to login again.
You don't watch on Schd, you watch at http://doesvirtual.com/watch. Per the email.
That's where I am, it takes me to the itinerary, there is a tab on the top that says Watch, however it just reloads the page and does nothing
Howdy from Finish Line....keep the good product coming!!!
Anyone else stand in line for coffee this morning to get that real conference feeling?
Close! I did pre-conference #happy-hour last night. 😄
@jtf Yes, one mediocre coffee and some form of tiring pastry please, thank you.
Awesome, it's great to have more Colombian people here... 😄
I was briefly stuck in a tad of traffic - does that count?
Absolutely! Later I might run a few miles in confusion to various buildings to simulate being in Las Vegas.
<!here> After opening remarks, join our morning plenary speakers for Q&A in #ask-the-speaker-plenary !
Let me know if you still have trouble, Thomas (and, hello, by the way!)
Do you have an email in your inbox recently titled "The Conference Will Begin Soon"
There is a link in there you can click to join. Should log you in and bring you to the livestream
go to https://doesvirtual.com/watch not the http://devopsenterprisesummitlasve.sched.com that will not show the watch tab. pretty confusing.
I am on the https://doesvirtual.com/watch and see the schedule with the speaker BIOs
Trying to do that now but it looks like my company laptop has Cookies blocked and I am unable to change it
Reminder: The DevOps Enterprise Summit has a Code of Conduct because we want everyone to have an amazing time here at the event. Here’s the summary: > Listen well when someone else is sharing. Share well when you have something to say. Respect everyone at all times… and speak up if you see something or hear something that isn’t consistent with the environment we want for this community. If you have any issues, email <mailto:help@itrevolution.com|help@itrevolution.com> or direct message @jeff.gallimore. Good morning from Baltimore, MD. Looking forward to a great conference!
Yes, dont see any video, I log in and I still see the same page to login again. It does not give any error
a colleague of mine was kicked out to login page, now cant login with their credential
I’m heading over to #ask-the-speaker-plenary to answer any questions, as I’m the speaker right now!!! 🙂. See you there!!!
Morning from Australia where the jet lag is real, virtually (02:30am)
Hey Matt. I thought midnight was bad, you're dedicated.
Is there a way to full screen the video?
We are working on a way to make the video full screen - stay tuned!
I am unable to view the video. Please can someone point me to the right direction ?
Thank you @james_feudo. It worked on my personal laptop AND I had to reset my password.
Good morning from the beautiful foliage and mountains in New Hampshire!
Coffee ✔️ False Positives Suck sticker ✔️ Ready for a great conference from Chicago 😁
HAHA love it and all the different personalities shown through stickers!
@alex @annp I can't get logged in. I even reset my password and it still doesn't let me in when I go to https://doesvirtual.com/login?referrer=178
Nevermind...I tried Chrome and it came up
No worries! Thank you for responding! 🙂
Steve it may have been a timing issue for me as well. I reset my password and couldn't get in using IE. After about 5min I switched to Chrome and got in
For those looking for the “full screen” option on the video player, refresh the page and you should have that option in the lower right of the player now.
Good morning everyone from Minneapolis, it’s great to be attending DOES again this year. I love this community.
Hey @jatwell , i’ll miss hanging out after hours 😁 MSP is well represented! Woot!
I managed to get it. you need to enable 3rd party cookies :white_frowning_face:
You have no covid on the island, or so my mum tells me (highly unreliable source of info). I live in Minneapolis now, but my cousins grew up in Newport and so I spent a lot of time running around Carisbrooke castle as a child
IOW, another from Chichester and Im a Brighton bot, though I now live in Phoenix, Az. Love the IOW. Many happy cricket tours there
Hey @mwhitney! IU alum and Indy resident here.
Haven't found anything yet. I just set by browser zoom to the point where it filled most of the window.
For those looking for the “full screen” option on the video player, refresh the page and you should have that option in the lower right of the player now.

Hello from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! I've always wanted to attend this conf. Awesome remote world
hello back from a fellow Brazilian currently living in Germany hehe
All the Slack action + the live talk is stretching my cognitive load. Any recommendations on how to fit this conference in your head?!?
I think Jeff will cover it right now? Also interested in getting some tips
I found it helps to have a document open where I can copy/paste comments, links, etc. That helps avoid FOMO as it does along, and at the end I have a document with stuff to follow up on.
Don’t miss the Q&A in #ask-the-speaker-plenary
A shout out to the team for finding creative and innovative ways to have this conference virtually!
First time joining here as well, excited. Hello from Germany, Frankfurt!
Hello, as Eduardo its also my first time, from Cordoba, Argentina
Hi all - it's a pleasure to be back at DOES, even if it's virtual. It's been a couple years since my last in San Fran, but looking forward to great content again!
Hello from Vancouver. BC. Its my first time at the summit also, can’t wait.
Hi from Chicago, Very excited for the first time joining the DOES event.
Hello from New York. Very excited to meet people and learn from everyone
Hello everyone. If anyone has questions about how to enable DevOps for http://salesforce.com ping me.
Reminder: Please update your Slack profile to include more information about yourself. Name, image, organization, title, pronouns… whatever you feel comfortable sharing with this community to help us learn a little more about you. Here’s an example… https://devopsenterprise.slack.com/files/UATE4LJ94/F01C0C6VC6T/image.png
HI , Virtual made it possible for me to join DOES from UK. Looking forward for the event
As in, "I thought we had it under control, but then things went kinda 2020 on us!"
@mgallagher refresh the page and the full screen option should appear in the videos toolbar
Excited to be back at DOES ... Hope everyone has a Safe, Healthy & Awesome Day!
Reminder: Who doesn’t like games? Well, we have them! Play some fun games and maybe win some prizes. Get more info at https://doesvirtual.com/games or in #games. https://devopsenterprise.slack.com/files/UATE4LJ94/F01CKEA9PAQ/book-children-fiction-toys-games-board-games-1082790-pxhere.com.jpg
Yes. Refresh the page and they’ve added the feature
Refresh the page, and the fullscreen option should appear in the player (next to the settings gear)
Hey Hasan! I wish we were at a real conference and could hang out a bit ;-)
Hello everyone from Iowa. This will be my third DOES USA and I'm so excited to be back and ready to network with so many of you! I'm a Product & Engineering Coach in a Financial Services Fortune 200 company. Interested in connecting about Value Stream Mapping, and in overcoming cultural barriers to agility & DevOps. Probably many other organizational topics as well.
It so depressing watching all the conversations happen during DOES and not being in the actually even this year. and feeling out of the loop. Hope everyone has a great event.
Was just thinking the same. Great we can do this Virtual but makes me miss "normal"
Yeah i'm not even signed up for the virtual this year. So i'm reading conversations and have no context. ha ha
@pgibbs1587 You can still join us for Wednesday's Happy Hour: https://info.nowsecure.com/speakeasy-lounge.html
I love the virtual formation... I find I am able to engage with more people than IRL... though some might say that's just a personal problem 😂
@nickeggleston i dont hate it but its just another reminder that life is far from normal.
@pgibbs1587 rereading... I wasn't trying to be dismissive of your experience. if I were good at in-person networking, Im sure I'd feel the same.
@nickeggleston All good. it didn't even come across that way to me.
Hi Everyone! Greetings from the SF Bay Area! This is my first DOES, excited to "be" here with all of you!
Here are the direct links for the presos: Dropbox: http://itrevolution.com/DOES20-db GitHub: http://itrevolution.com/DOES20-git
The Breakouts have been posted, the Plenary session slides will be added shortly!
how do people keep up with slack? I cant slack and focus on the talk lol
oh...nice...didn't know that was a thing....
You can find it in the More
menu there, and make it permanent with the Customize your preference
section at the bottom of it
What an amazing Twitter account.
indeed, never thought I would take so many notes within 30 min haha
Trying to stay organized :); decided to put up a personal Jamboard - one page per talk; and capturing inspirational stickies as I see/hear them!
I am using OneNote, but watching, taking notes and participating in Slack is challenging. Should have got myself a third monitor haha
yeah... I've got my rocketbook for taking notes... but my 4 year old is home with me, and distracting me... so getting the slide deck afterwards will be very helpful.
Don’t wait: Dropbox: http://itrevolution.com/DOES20-db GitHub: http://itrevolution.com/DOES20-git
Oh this is really neat. I’m a real paper-and-pen person, and always looking for ways to link that to better data insights and correlation
@zoe It is really great. I don't feel guilty wasting paper for simple things, and when I do take notes I need to keep it scans nicely and I can search it later. I use it way more than I ever would have guessed before getting it.
Don’t miss the Q&A in #ask-the-speaker-plenary
Head on over to #xpo-launchdarkly to meet the LaunchDarkly team, ask questions, and talk all things feature flags! 🎏
Listening to the talk, and typing the questions to the speakers at the same time. Ouch!
Starting spooky season early! 🎃 Who else is loving working from home in comfy socks??
Catching my breath between watching the talk, taking notes, and reading Slack comments. Whew.. think I need a break already! But I don't want to leave!
you have bandwidth to take notes? lol. I try to watch and keep up with slack and find I can't do either very well.
@jonathansmart1 I try... it's the context switching that kills me. Trying to focus on the Slack and the talk at the same time I notice my focused comprehension slipping. Gene has an advantage, having heard all the talks already, he knows where he wants to amplify or question. And in the podcasts, I love that he pulls the andon cord and stops the narative to insert clarifying comments. How to do that in the online conference is an interesting problem. It would be cool to experiment with having the attendees stop the talk until their questions are answered, then proceed to the next point... and find a mechanism to start the line again...
Don't miss out on the ✨MANY:sparkles: fantastic prizes and giveaways which our sponsors are offering in their virtual booths and on Slack! Pop over to #sponsors to find a complete list of all the sponsor channels to join.
shout-out to all amazing partners supporting us not missing one min of the virtual summit: my partner just brought me dinner that she cooked while I was furiously typing notes and Slack comments for the past 2h (usually we cook together)
New computer.... who dis? Just kidding, first 3 day conference in my jammies. Lets get IT!

I am no vendor but a happy attendee that loves stickers. PM if you would be down to getting a care package from me. 👻
You know, if all the videos are recorded, I don't know why there isn't closed captioning.
Is everyone hearing the phone ring sound for chats, or will that be missed if we have notifications muted?
I took a quick break to grab a snack from the fridge, and I spilled a carton of salsa all over the kitchen floor. If anyone is available to talk to my wife about “blameless retros” lmk 😰
I am glad mine brought the dinner served to our home office 😄
You may want to start with a learning review. Build the timeline. What events led up to the event. What pressure were you under, etc. What did you know at the time. What conditions contributed to this issue?
watching the talk on your phone in one hand while salsa'ing?
Love this running list of books mentioned during DOES talks: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/149789.Devops_Enterprise_Summit_2020_Book_leads. Shout out to @matthew.cobby for posting!
Ross, Maya and also 4 chances to win 25K AAdvantage miles this afternoon in the networking session! Prepare for takeoff (and more airline puns) in our channel

We're only four sessions in on Day 1 and my head is about ready to explode with all this learning. 🤯 And this is my third year attending this conference so a bit of this has been just idea reinforcement. Still amazed at this conference's ability to come year after year and still provide a wealth of new and fresh ideas to share!! 😄
1st time for me, and while i was pulled away (thanks virtual confr and covid) the CSG people just changed my life and gave me hope.
So great to hear this, @mring — I credit the aspirations and ambitions of the entire programming committee, who have ambitious goals that we all reach for through the talks. @jason.cox @cornelia @damon @scott.prugh @jeff.gallimore @ben.grinnell @chawklady @tapabrata.pal @jonathansmart1 @jwillis
@mring totally agree with you... there's so much to follow in the talks and chats! It's exhilarating!
The food gap between Vegas and ramen noodles is the biggest letdown :(
OMG YES. This would would have been an expensive food week!
I was away and missed something on ramen?! My favorite! I am on a personal mission on trying the best ones in area. no blog about it.
@cnguyen I'm in Arlington, TX and we're in somewhat of a ramen desert but we have super delicious pho on every corner. It's not quite the same but a decent trade off
Like Arlington VA there are some pretty decent ramen places.

Lowkey.. we are a family! DevOps Summit 2020! Anything is possible.
Random fact, did you know the most sociopaths and psychopath per capital can be found in DC..... I have been listening to a lot of true crime lately.
Random fact - did you know that it is illegal for a Californian to ride their bicycle through a public swimming pool? Or that in Los Angeles, California, it http://www.dumblaws.com/laws/united-states/california?page=60 to hunt moths under a street lamp?
Well damn. I know there is one in VA about illegal tickling.
San Jose is home to 13 time Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest Champion, Joey Chestnut - 75 hot dogs I didn't have any compelling sociopath information to share

Exactly! It's a brainchild of @genek101 from an earlier event he attended!
Still looking for inspiration on what to have for dinner while grabbing some lunch? We've put together a https://assets.red-gate.com/community/Redgate-Cookbook-2020.pdf with amazing recipes to choose from! 🥐 🍰
Very cool. Might have to try the More-sauce-than-pasta!
So fun and creative! I think many of us are in a Covid cooking rut. 😩
That's a good one! We added chicken to that one for some added protein. 🐔 The Berry Cheesecake Blondies are really, really good if you're looking for something sweet. (And hard to mess up. hahaha)
This kind of came out of that. lol We all found out that we were spending a lot of extra time cooking since we were home and started sharing recipes.

Oh, rats - so sorry! Hold on, I'll get you a GitHub link - thanks for the heads up!
@james141 Okay, GitHub was giving us a teeny bit of trouble so that link is a redirect for now. Hoping to have it up and running soon!

@tommd I can only get the feed. Messaging is broken. 😞
That's some extreme lengths not to answer my messages @dave 😛
Ha, my answer is literally in my cut buffer!
Hey, everybody! We know there’s a lot of exciting stuff happening at the DevOps Enterprise Summit and it must be hard to choose where to spend your time. We’ve gotten some feedback that using “at-here” is creating some alert fatigue and distraction, so please post your messages without it. https://devopsenterprise.slack.com/files/UATE4LJ94/F01D8946Y2U/no-at-here.png
When someone says they miss Vegas, it could just mean they miss the drinks :)
Reminder: The plenary sessions are starting again in 5 minutes. Start making your way back to your browser. https://devopsenterprise.slack.com/files/UATE4LJ94/F01D34MC2KS/image.png
My headset battery is low. This means I officially can go to sleep. See you all tomorrow 🙂
I'd like to promote the value of #humane tech management. Can anyone share or point me to good horror stories of managers/leaders who've focused on instilling terror in their team and weaponizing metrics to identify which developers to fire? Serious request. I'd love to get some horror stories and stack them alongside stories of humane management being successful.
@abd3721: This might be a good question to pose to the engineering leaders at Split Software at the Q&A happening at 5:30 PT
Thanks very much @channing.benson I missed that Q&A opportunity but I'll certainly check out Split
I have two nope three off the top of my head... want them here (with no names or companies attached) or in a dm (still with no names attached)?
@tana.berry anonymous true stories are great. Post them here for everyone's benefit
ok, true, here goes: 1. I was in a mid-level mgmt position, and had cause to send an email to all of the executive leadership team about an upcoming hackathon that I was helping run. I was very excited about it, and thus used the word "excited" in my email. Wow my boss immediately took me aside and scolded me, said I needed to be more professional and not to use the word "excited."
2. When I had small kiddos I got in the habit of waking up very early... I was sometimes at work by 6:30 or 7:00. One of the dev managers wold walk the halls around 7 or 7:30 and pretend he was just saying good morning to us early birds, but we quickly figured out he was really monitoring who came in at what time. Super-frustrating, and it showed zero trust and zero understanding of the fact that everyone has a different schedule for when they are most productive. We felt like factory robots instead of intelligent builders.
3. When Agile was first being adopted, there was a dreadful period of companies buying a gazillion time-tracking tools, and expecting us to enter stats for every single tiny bit of work we did. There was a tool we had to sue to track every 15 minutes of our work... was horrid. I overheard a VP and a dev manager talking about a developer, saying that his work-stats showed he only worked about 6.5 to 7 hours a day... or so that blasted tool claimed. I knew that he got there early and left late and had a lot of brilliant work going on in his head at all moments... but the tool didn't have a way to capture that. I made me very upset that they were measuring his worth based on false metrics from a dreadful tool.
@abd3721 I am realizing that all of those have something to do with the need for trust and respect from our leaders, and the importance of knowing that all humans are different; we are not robots. ;-)
That's a perfect set of anecdotes, thanks so much @tana.berry!! More always welcome from anyone
@abd3721 go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecKgqJRvZ5M&t=163s and start at about 0:57, it's a pretty smart tactic!

Sounds terrifying 🙂 Although Steve Jobs is not usually held up as an anti-pattern
Ready for Wednesday
at least it's not 01:48 in Australia. Also they don't confuse you with Austria. ppl confuse us that often that this meme was introduced:
I assume the keynotes are at your dinner time though 😄 well done staying up. I never make it past 11 so missed a lot of the London event.
yeah, glad one can re-watch talks. they start at 5:30 p.m. and end (including HappyHour (who would ever miss that?)) at 3:30 a.m.
Definitely supreme dedication for further east time zones. When I think of Australia I think of Huntsman spiders and amazing nighttime views of stars, and then the bands Pond and Tame Impala
:rolling_on_the_floor_laughing: love your display name. as far as I've learned from workmates (one of them drove 18k km by bike from Austria to Australia - check his story here: https://austria2australia.com/) Australia is mostly divided by rural and urban areas. But Huntsman Spiders are the real s...tuff. they are allegedly everywhere!
Hunstmans are scary af, but completely harmless. Despite knowing this for the better part of 39 years I still scream like an anime school girl when one touches me.
I can't even imagine a Hunstman up close. Whew! We had a jumping spider in my hallway where I live and that was nuts as it was the only way I could walk out and never knowing if the freaking thing would try and jump.
My first time in an airbnb was a sharehouse in SF, the guys there told me not to worry about the little house spiders. I sent them a video of a large hunstman. I am not sure any of them slept a wink that night in case one had smuggled itself in my suitcase.
here, I catch our spiders and bring them outside without killing them. but these Huntsman creatures ... not sure if I could do that. but after all, I'm not Chris Hemsworth's wife. she does this, obviously.
Or Robert Whitaker: https://youtu.be/RCWWZOmrZrg
Thanks for connecting with us! And a big shout out to the IT Rev Team for organizing such an amazing Day 1! 🙌:skin-tone-2: 🎉 See ya tomorrow...
