They are not, as Chatham House rules cc @jeff.gallimore
Good morning (day/evening/night, wherever you are ๐ ) Looking forward to day 2, just realised I was yesterday on the army preparing for war, I was part of the USS enterprise deck and I got some education on becoming a CSI detective. Yes, this appears to be DevOps, an amazing world with an even more amazing community! Absolutely sure today will continue with the same vibe!
As they say, my body is ready... however the mind is a bit groggy. โ
Good morning everyone. Just finished my Croissant and Laugenzopf mit Kรคse with milk coffee. Ready for Day 2! ๐
Morning everyone from France. Delighted to be part of this great discussion. Thanks again to speaker for their wisdom.
Good morning! Another sunny day here in the Netherlands. โ๏ธ ๐ Ready for more excellent talks!
It is supposed to get up to 31ยฐ in London today! How about there?
ooof. we're only hitting 29 today (i bet we hit 30), 29 tomorrow and 31 friday before the rain comes
Reminder: <!here> Get yourself in front of your browser for the opening remarks. Weโre kicking off Day 2 in 15 minutes!
Good Morning! Luxembourg turns into the French Riviera this week (minus the :beach_with_umbrella:).
I'd like to let the organisers know that I think this virtual summit is great, way more intense than I expected, but... I think I'm in the groove now.
How was Day 1, everyone? Post an emoji!!!

Good morning from Yorkshire ๐ฎ !! Here is a sneak preview of the conclusions of some early adopters of the Team Topologies ๐ ideas - @me1208 and I will be sharing more details at 13:25 UK time
Being on booth duty yesterday i missed a lot (nearly all) talks. What's the best thing people are seeing? what new tech am i missing out on?
Thank you @brent939 for manning the booth...yesterday check out Shaaron Alvarez pitch and the iptq start from Swiss Re...great sessions.
question regarding the e-books, anyone figured out if we could use the downloaded e-books on e-readers?
question regarding the e-books, anyone figured out if we could use the downloaded e-books on e-readers?
Hi Davy - yes, you should be able to access the e-books on most mobile e-readers!
@annp can you give some more specific instructions? Looked into it quickly yesterday but did not figure it out straight away.
@stijn.claes I think you need to connect your ereader to the laptop like a USB disk and then transfer the ebook. The reader will then pick it up and you should be able to read it (if format are supported)
Unsure what file format the e-books you're talking about are in but you can use tools like https://calibre-ebook.com/ to convert them to most other popular formats. My wife loves her Kindle and I'm always converting .epub format files to .mobi ones for her ๐
I'm going to loop in my colleague, @annan, who can give further insight!
Hi @davy.kenis right now, IT Revolution ebooks are available to read via our website reader. Once you claimed an ebook, you should have received an email confirming your free book and a link. We will be releasing an app that will be downloadable to e-readers and smartphones next month, when that goes live, you will get an email and link letting you know itโs available. I hope this answered you question?

I have a list of 13-14 books I've seen recommended so far. I can try to look at that later to see what I can add to it.
The ones I referenced in my talk yesterday were: โข Drive - Dan Pink โข Inspired - Marty Cagan โข Measure What Matters - John Doerr โข Radical Focus - Christine Wodtke and one I mentioned on slack in some other conversations and frequently recommend: โข How to Measure Anything - Douglas W Hubbard
Thanks Julia, I really appreciate it. I missed your Byte talk yesterday as I was listening to a different one. I received a very positive feedback from my colleagues have to go through your talk from video library.

โ - I feel like we should call the conference to be 50% longer than the focused delivery window so that people can continue to consume and interact with the "other" content and each other before having to revert to "normal" work

Just finished an interesting call and would welcome peopleโs thoughts on managing secrets within CI/CD pipelines. Is this a common challenge? Anyone found any great solutions?
Vault solutions tend to be the key (!) here
Hashicorp Vault, Thycotic Secret Server, maybe Azure Key Vault
Yep same here. hashicorp Vault inside kubernetes, with jenkins pipelines running in same cluster is our approach.
And these should be used for secrets that need to be used during the deployment process. Runtime secrets shouldnโt be deployed during an app build/deploy pipeline process at all.
Any challenges that come up when using vault solutions? Iโm thinking dynamic secrets and provisioning them at scale?
Hashicorp Vault is probably your best bet for dynamic secrets + provisioning them at scale. Thatโs exactly what itโs designed to do.
Yea, I love the vault API, it is very well documented. Knowing golang helps and if you do their golang SDK is very easy to use and simple to create a cross os binary to assist in CRUD actions (their cli tool is great but can be overcumbersome when running inside docker containers)

Hi Ed! I've got some starting material here that might help: https://thinking.visible.is/feed/starting-out but I'm always happy to jump on a zoom to chat about selling the idea or anything else
Value Stream Mapping - ITIL v4 has some useful material on Service Value Chains. Other approaches I've used are 'Follow the data' through systems to identify dependencies (instead of follow the $$). Uncovering the dependencies is difficult, visualising them is key. Tools like Celonis are a good start but don't uncover the technical dependencies
I like tools like celonis for highly capable orgs who've been down the road for a while, but I can't imagine it provides any ROI in less than a year. Most tools and frameworks I find suffer the same upfront cost of setup and training vs a mapping exercise that is done in a few hours. We have a long way to go to bridge the gap
Thanks! https://www.lastweekinaws.com/does has the takewaway items mentioned in my talk for those who realized as I do that โvideos arenโt clickable links.โ
@edward.pearson Hereโs a piece on process mapping that might be of help on the VSM question.

3. But I'm thinking of making them raise a trouble ticket in triplicate and seeking at two additional approvals to get to me. That should do the trick.
Does anyone have any good content (article/books/blog posts/etc) on how increasing WIP/batch size/flow load actually decreases velocity? Asking as it's something I believe in, but struggle to communicate to my broader organization.

You can also go way back in the cannon to Goldratt and Theory of Constraints. (And his book, The Goal) https://www.leanproduction.com/theory-of-constraints.html
In the past, I've done a demonstration where I ask 2 people to solve a simple problem and as they try to solve the problem, I throw more problems at one of them in the midst of it. Then show how bringing in more work doesn't improve outcomes or increase velocity. It just causes distractions which causes churn when switching tasks.
An oldie and a goldie: https://www.tastycupcakes.org/2013/05/the-penny-game/
Also, think of a road / motorway / freeway / autobahn. The more cars, the slower they go

+1 for the penny game that @jonathansmart1 mentioned. It is a great, quick way for people to experience the impact of batch size.
https://lethain.com/limiting-wip/ is a good treatment too, with links to some workbooks you can play around with numbers to observe the behaviour.

Not sure how to do that with a livestream :) so basically are suggesting instead of live-streaming release the videos ?:face_with_monocle:
Live voting to tell @patrick.debois256 to talk faster/slower! :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:
I'd like to be able to go back 30 secs so I could finish notes on a slide.
Not sure if the player can do anything about it, more even dB levels
already shared on tweeter, but a super-low-bandwith mode would be amazing. Like it shows an image every 4 seconds instead of a video... audio-only was a good feature some times yesterday when my internet wasnโt working really
detail: the player on ipad in fullscreen shows the controls in the middle of the screen... not a deal breaker but just saying ๐
what i would love is a โrewind 10 secondsโ; sometimes i was like โwhat did he say ??โ

I'm working for a digital bank. Even though we have an OK CI/CD pipeline, which only needs few clicks to build/promote to PROD. But we still have to fire a CAB ticket (JIRA Helpdesk) and attend the CAB forum for every single change. This usually adds a day or two to a feature journey. Anyone can point me to any good content to improve the situation?

Two amazing books: 1. The Unicorn Project by @genek101 2. Accelerate by @nicolefv
there are many good ways to both comply with change management quality and speed. One of the first easy steps without having to change your process would be to get most of your changes considered as "standard changes" = pre-approved change requests not going to a CAB, automate your CR creation and you are done. But that's only a first start of a journey to a transformation.
@scott.prugh may have some thoughts on CAB ๐ There's a forum paper from 2019 on it.
I found this twitter message from Scott Prugh about eliminating CAB https://twitter.com/ScottPrugh/status/1175007056903987200 , but i don't see the paper yet
"for every single change." ๐ Is it just a case of "because regulation" that everything has to be approved? Are there lower level impact changes that can be accelerated either automatically or with a faster review process?
https://itrevolution.com/book/breaking-the-change-management-barrier/
@simonw even a security group change or a whitelist DB update needs a CAB, it's pretty frustrated. I think they're just cargo culting the "CAB"
@jeff.gallimore thank you. Now i understand what @dominicameans about "a forum paper", i'm new to the ITRevolution
Lots of good papers there on lots of topics. And welcome to the community!
@quan.nguyen See our paper as Jeff mentions. Note that people closest to the change know the most about how to deliver it safely.
We moved to "local cab" where the teams own their changes and review them as part of standup.
You can do this with manual changes too and I highly recoomend it.
exactly, as @scott.prugh is saying, empower the team as much as possible so you can break this dependency
I had the same situation in a large financial institution. Try and get a an agreement to what is a standard change that can be pushed without CAB, or at least weโll notify you but will be classed as automatic approval
For software, 1) you can make sure that code commit comments are reviewed/approved by the right stakeholders before being pulled into the master branch. 2) Change the architecture to remove dependencies on applications and infrastructure outside your control, that way you don't need permission from others to make a change 3) Make the person that owns the risk responsible for approving a change, they must be satisfied that there is sufficient mitigation in place if the change goes wrong eg rollback, restore, incident teams are ready to manage defects if you can't rollback 4) Test people, test processes, test tools to give confidence the change will work
