If anyone is interested in exchange about the organizational aspects of DevOps (e. g. setting up application support) or breaking up silos in a traditional Plan - Build - Run organisation...drop me a line or two π
I will drop a question and I am very interested in your opinions: how do you deal with 24/7 support requirements (you build it, you run it) and a structure development process (e. g. Scrum) and on-call duty?
1) team composition to include members who are on duty and who are on call roster. So you may have 9-12 people to cater for this (sometimes) 2) For unplanned work - use lanes to define the type of work and act accordingly. we allot 20-30% of the capacity for this, and patterns/problem management goes for automation backlog as planned work. Teams are encouraged to use swarming to reduce MTTR where possible. 3) For Planned work - 60% capacity is planned. Tech debt and new features are prioritised accordingly. I have used above combination at multiple places and it works well - over time the team matures.
@sandeep.mvp Regarding 1) But is not this building a silo within the product team? Those who are called and those who are not?
Itβs the social contract that the team decides, everyone understand the need of the role. Other pattern is to rotate entire team - you will find that also has limitations.
Wow the interstitial music is so much louder than the speakers. Humble ask to please normalize it sometime before the end of the conference. π
Good morning from London π I'm from Win Technologies/Betway and really looking forward to learning from you all. I am talking on Thursday about Testing in Production, if anyone has any questions about that or LaunchDarkly feel free to message me

About to get my second coffee here in MO (US Central Time). It might be a three-coffee day by the end, but itβll be SO worth it!
Just grabbed my first cuppa tea in OH. Replacing 3am flights with 3am conference talks is worth it.
Welcome, everyone! I was in Texas before North Carolina. Probably a 6 coffee day here.
Usually with London and flying in, the first thing that I think of is endlessly circling Heathrow airport waiting for clearance to land. And cloudy skies.
Oh yeah, definitely 6 cups! Might have to run to Starbucks on the lunch break! π Got my first cup on the break!

How many #DOES events have everyone attended? Is this your first? I just was at my first one in Vegas last year and loved it.
This is my second DOES. London 2019 was my first, and the best conference & learning experience I've had.
That's great! Only done Vegas so far. London hopefully in the future when things are back where we all can. High quality is always the first to mind when I think of this conference.
That's great! I was thinking virtually might allow even more to attend one. A great way for many to finally experience it.
I'm UK based, but I'd buy a ticket for the Vegas event in November if it were going to be virtual too. Maybe there's an opportunity for the IT Rev folks to widen participation by doing virtual alongside the physical. (hint hint any IT Rev folks reading this π)
I don't know what their plans are Andy. Such crazy times and the options of IRL and virtual until new normal sounds good. Great you are able to join. Vegas is great, especially all the hallway conversations or meeting people over brunch. I've seen some tradeshows experiment with a portion of an IRL to have some parts be virtual. Copying @jdouglas on your suggestion
I think itβs my fourth β I keep coming back because thereβs no other conference like it. Definitely a unique and powerful community.

Hi @wolfgang.lucny π Katie here from - Weβre working with manufacturing companies to enable agility and devops practices. A 100 year old warehouse in the US is leveraging Slack to facilitate communication and order fulfillment in warehouses, ensuring that 98% of products ship from stock within 24 hours (a feat even Amazon prime has difficulty with). Iβd be happy to have someone reach out to you to discuss in more detail?
Hi @kpope - thanks for reaching out. Would be interested to better understand how Slack can be utilized. I'm pretty busy this week but got availability next week. BTW: I'm based in Central Europe (CET) - not sure if you got an colleagues here.
@wolfgang.lucny what is the best email for you? If youβd like to send it over DM that works as well π
Hi @wolfgang.lucny a value stream approach might be an ideal way to start the effort. Mik details how he's applied it in several environments (in Product-to-Project) and most manufacturing environments already have experience with Value Stream Mapping. Happy to chat more about it - you can send me an message here or via http://visible.is
Hi @steveelsewhere. Thanks for reaching out. I got already first experiences with VSM but keen to understand how you apply it within a manufacturing environment. Will reach out to you via http://visible.is in the course of next week. Enjoy #DOES2020

There's certainly a dojo mojo around. Maybe someone should invite BoJo?

Love the tagline = Deploy more. Sleep better.
It's immersive learning in how we want teams to work using the team's backlog. As @genek101 says, using daily work to improve daily work.
For the one we run, they are accelerators. A mean to move from talking about DevOps and start or double down on doing it
Bring everyone up to a common level and gets hands on experience with your craft.
@8mckeem8 totally. In large finserv places (like ours!) the opportunity for experimentation might need to be structured - this sounds like a great framework for that

Tell Us MoreΒ :face_with_monocle:Β -Β https://doesvirtual.com/tasktopΒ - For traditional organizations that have many apps, services, and projects, how do you start to organize them into product value streams?
Well we start with the current state and then work with customers to choose a few to start the journey with. So yes we have started this journey with many large organizations.
I will be talking a little about this tomorrow in our talk but we also have more resources on this. You can also email me at <mailto:carmen.deardo@tasktop.com|carmen.deardo@tasktop.com>
Typically we recommend starting with one external product value stream and one internal to learn and start to develop patterns for scaling.

There's already a few different formats out there that all do something really similar and are not shareable/reusable.
I did bring it by the CDF interoperability group, but they were more focused at the time on having Tekton be the standard. For me at least I'd love to see something that brings the best from each of the solutions that already exist, and is built in a collaborative way.
We've been using 3 musketeers pattern to unify developer experience from laptop to pipeline. https://3musketeers.io/
Nice goal @jyavorska! I'll check the repo. @matthew.cobby - thanks for the 3 musketeers. We have been doing something really close without knowing it had a name. I'll definitely check this out further as a pattern...

Agree with @jtf, but also trying to establish process where the responsability is shared. For example with security, even though Sec Team are responsible of it, it is usually Engineering that bake it into the application. Being able to provide tooling that bring security to the developer, helps break the silos and is favorable to a more DevSecOps practice π Beside that, Pizza and beer to get people talking π» π πͺ

drop more requests into #xpo-github ! or in our zoom (which is over there if you want). or just ping me here i dont care~
That you update Enterprise Version Features as fast as you do Public Version :-)
would love to hear more about your mention of action workflows. like β’ pause an action from going out and delay it (maybe in terms of deployment?) β’ whatwould the delete be doing? β’ what is rename?
I haven't re-checked recently so some might be past issues you set the name in the Yaml, change the name, but the old runs stay there with the old name so UI does not match Yaml
ahhhh i see i see. i think the historical data is going to stay the same, but if i edit the file and change the name of the job it should update now
pause and force run when you are testing workflows, esp. slow complex deployments, you need more control and disable triggers from UI not from Yaml
I found myself in the bad habit of a dummy file and dummy commit just to force a workflow to run
you could also trigger an action to run based on an issue label to be applied and set some conditionals too
yes, but you need an innatural issue living there just to trigger the workflow
would be nice to have a smile/frown button on preview features lately I found an issue with the UI preview but struggled to find how to notify
yeah im definitely biting my tongue to not reveal too much about where we're headed with product work but we're looking to make this easier on people.
I know that teams are working hard so I am not complaining, more pinpointing what is high pri for me
