Good morning, everyone! I'm so excited to share what we've created for you over the next three days โย great to see y'all here!
It feels good to be back! Like visiting extended family over the holidays!
Hi folks! I'm excited to be here and excited for the content today!
Hi all, I am representing Flatiron Health (Oncology Research & EMRs) Excited to learn and see what I can take back to improve cancer care ๐
What amazing and important work โย can we connect sometime, maybe tomorrow during one of the breaks? Thanks for being here!
Thank you for the kind words! Of course, I will reach out to you on break tomorrow. Thanks for having all of us here.
Good morning โ๏ธ canโt wait to see what they have in store for us!
Good seeing you again, @nickeggleston โย thanks you and @james.moverley and @jonathansmart1 for helping experiment with engagement outside of the conferences. Got super busy since the last one, but looking forward to our next time at bat after this conference!! Cc @jeff.gallimore
Reminder: Get yourself in front of your browser for the opening remarks. Weโre kicking off Day 1 of the DevOps Enterprise Summit in 15 minutes! https://devopsenterprise.slack.com/files/UATE4LJ94/F01D34MC2KS/image.png
First time at the DOES - really excited to hear from leading experts in all types of industry from around the world on their DevOps experiences (and to use the best emoji of all time - !)
It wouldnโt be DOES without Bill Palmer keeping my feet on the ground.
YES! Iโm wearing my good luck Unicorn Project socks of +7 against downtime and anomalies. No saving throws needed yet! ๐
Reminder: Hey, everybody! Let us know where you are while youโre attending the DevOps Enterprise Summit. Add your flags to this message.
You do such a great job of slacking while gesturing with your hands @genek ๐
How do we get to the opening remarks... All I'm seeing is the video library of past conferences.
is it working for anyone else? I cannot see the live session either
Looking forward to your talk later this morning, @2marcboudreau ! It's such a wonderful vision of what government services could and can be!
A presentation from @virginia.shook from National Security Agency โ who is literally in the business of secrecy! Amazing! I'm so delighted that you're presenting this afternoon!
Congratulations for everything that youโve achieved, and the recognition that you received โย so well deserved! And even moreso that you can share it publicly!
So excited about the expert talks this year โย they have so much incredible stuff to teach us!
All good, having fun. Switched roles to Product Officer at a smaller firm which was just officially acquired today - life's manic
@alex can help you with that. could you let us know what youโre seeing? maybe post a screenshot?
@genek - really looking forward to William Hill - doing Pagerduty and Rundeck, sounds like a good session
๐ @jonathansmart1 cannot miss @genek, DOES, speakers, delegates and this experience ๐
I forgot to mention Rabinowโs Law from Dr. @ronwestrum: โRabinowโs Law: โif the boss is a dope, you will have, or soon will have dopes all the way down.โ ๐
So, an Inverse Rabinow's Law might be: > if you want your boss to be dope, > hire dopes to do your work for you?
From Dr. @mik: โThe transactional cost of each interaction is much lower than in physical events, and the average enjoyment level is higher.โ ๐
Reminder: Please update your Slack profile to include more information about yourself. Name, image, organization, title, pronounsโฆ whatever you feel comfortable sharing with this community to help us learn a little more about you. Hereโs an exampleโฆ https://devopsenterprise.slack.com/files/UATE4LJ94/F01C0C6VC6T/image.png
This is my second virtual DOES and can confirm the interactions have been phenomenal and thanks to slack they last even after the conference ends ๐ซ can't wait for all the sessions and interactions this week
Reminder: The DevOps Enterprise Summit has a Code of Conduct because we want everyone to have an amazing time here at the event. Hereโs the summary: Listen well when someone else is sharing. Share well when you have something to say. Respect everyone at all timesโฆ and speak up if you see something or hear something that isnโt consistent with the environment we want for this community. If you have any issues, email <mailto:help@itrevolution.com|help@itrevolution.com> or direct message @jeff.gallimore. โ Good morning and hello everyone ๐
@genek Yes, please add your org and role to your Slack handle โย it helps everyone connect, relate, etc. Thx for reminder, @jeff.gallimore
Hello everyone from Cologne, Germany
Hey y'all! Good morning from South Carolina!
Okay, Iโm heading to #ask-the-speaker-plenary โย up first is @lucas.rettig and @brett.craig! See you there!
Reminder: Letโs take the action into #ask-the-speaker-plenary to interact live with the speakers and other attendees!
Hello ๐ from Berlin, Germany. Gaiwan is ITRevolution's technical partner to help make sure we all have a superb event!
What aspects of the conference are your folks responsible for @arne.brasseur ?
We developed the conference platform that you are all using to watch the talks, the video library for after the conference, a custom video editing toolchain to help with production, and the slack archive site.
Oooh ๐ where can we make suggestions? For example: sorting the video list by original broadcast order, filtering out videos previously watched, keeping track of how much of each video weโve seen, so we can pick up where we were before being interrupted etc?
Head into #ask-the-speaker-plenary to engage with the plenary speakers and other attendees during the talks.

Do we have a special Hashtag we are using for the event?
This is one of these times when either large monitor or dual monitors is essential
RECAP: Here is theย collection of all theย reference linksย that wereย shared / discussedย during the #DOES21 EUROPE event. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/devops-enterprise-summit-2021-reference-links-minus-books-pareek Enjoy Readingย ๐
I do love the slides at these events - much more playful and able to convey messages without being corporate.
Hello all from http://Nationwide.om
Is anyone else having issues with the video clarity of the plenary session - Target specifically"? Sorry if asked already
yes.. it was fuzzy for me
I was late getting on - Is Gene's intro available on deman now, or do I need to wait for the first block to end?
opening remarks from gene will be available a little later today.
Great talk by our friends at Target - nice job @brett.craig and @lucas.rettig
try pausing and restarting. I had freeze problems earlier and also reduced the resolution for a better feed (not as sharp picture, but less freezing)
Talking about the Phoenix Project (which I loved as a non-technical person) โฆ I literally have a โParts Unlimitedโ in my town!
Just an observation - most virtual conferences i've attended the last couple of years - most of the speakers seem to be screen readers/robotic in a sense.
@pradeep_gonaguntla - I had the video hang for a few minutes, but it came back by refreshing the page. Other than that, no issues.
@sara.gramling880 For me I tried mutiple ways but no success. It is the WATCH link on the top of SUMMIT home page correct ?
@pradeep_gonaguntla That is correct. "Plenary / Track 1" should be selected by default.
If anyone would like to share - what has been/is their most effective way to upskill or re-skill?
Audiobooks have been very helpful for me to sharpen my skills. I am in sales, so not sure if that is applicable to your question.
Thank you - it is an option for technology workers also...learning as I have experienced is multi-dimensional and not a one size fits all...
Love @cnguyen suggestion on Audiobooks -- great for connecting to new ideas. Also, I've been finding selective and orthogonal online training to be helpful. Selective = lot's of critical shopping and Orthogonal = taking courses that may not be directly related to what I do, get's me out of my comfort zone.
I use linked learning to up the skill of my teamโฆ it's immediate and applicable. I also make it part of the Retrospective.
Great suggestions @matt075 I know my company is offering benefits from MasterClass. Personally, i did enjoy the platform of ACloudGuru when aiming to get my AWS Cloud Practioner cert
Linked In Learning and ACloudGuru have been very helpful
I am currently listening to โnever split the differenceโ.
Have people used social-learning micro-learning, coaching/mentoring/assessments, etc..
But real talk.. best podcast/audio story (not technical) is Weโre Alive - Zombie dystopian future radio show.
Experiential learning is our most impactful, It allows us to address all of the necessary learnings to support truly transformative change.
I wonder how my battery is going to handle travelling this evening and watching the sessions

As much as I enjoy the ebooks available, I find my physical books have more notes and dog-ears and overall use than any of my ebooks in the ITRev Library. Is anybody giving away any physical books? ๐ cc @alex
I'm a consultant and back in the before times when travel was a thing half my suitcase would be IT Revolution books to give to prospective customers. Stapled inside would be my business card and a note "When you want to do this give me a call". It worked surprisingly well.
We love giving away books of all kinds too, but shipping 1000+ physical copies is unfortunately too cost and labor prohibitive. We promise that once weโre back to in person conferences, we will be back to sharing books that you can dog-ear to your heartโs content!
@lbmkrishna, As with so many things, there is a major supply chain issue in the book printing industry. We have even considered purchasing and storing paper in advance! So, when the time comes, much of what we will be able to offer will depend upon the stock available what weโre able to source.
Book books and more books!! You know we'll do our best to fill your suitcases just as soon as we're able. ๐
Every time when I travel to US for DOES; While returning home, I leave all my suitcase content back and fill only with IT Rev books ๐ cc - @mvk842, @leahb
You must be freezing when you arrive back home! ๐
I fly into the US with a suitcase full of Australian snacks and medicines for my friends who like pain killers that work. And fly out with books and things that won't ship to Australia. One of my colleagues a few years back over several trips brought back a BBQ/Smoker kit.
@nl_does - Itโs true. If I were doing a trade with you, Iโd want Nougat and Bosistos!

Addendum to Geneโs Love Letter to Conferences I met @steveelsewhere last year at DOES 2020 when he was facilitating a #lean-coffee session on value stream mapping. I asked him whether there were any books on VSM that he thought were really actionable for IT people. He indicated that he felt like there was a gap. Fast forward to DOES 2021, he and I just announced a book on VSM, flow engineering, and how to bridge across middle management and presented a talk here. Super grateful for the DOES community, and to have found Steve as a co-conspirator. Stay in touch with us at https://inside-out.work
Itโs been an absolutely wild ride, all the way back to my first DOES in 2014. I knew then that I wanted to be deeply involved with this community and itโs brought me so much insight, learning, and camaraderie ever since - hereโs to the next year and beyond! Remember to connect with everyone you can here, you never know who youโll be working with in a year!
I've met, and kept in touch with, many awesome people at the Lean Coffees at DOES!
I love this story!!! Thank you @steveelsewhere @abd3721
โ Come and join a Lean Coffee sessionย โ See the topics posted in the #lean-coffee channel!
I have so many channels and DMs 'starred' in the DOES Slack, that I need a 'double star' feature ๐
seems like i remember gene saying he kept a separate slack just for stuff like that :D

iโd love to hear other opinions on thisโฆ from my perspective, the most notable difference is the level of structure for the conversation. for lean coffee, itโs a little more structured and actively managed by the group (and a facilitator). for birds of a feather, the conversation sort of flows wherever the group wants to take it. here are a couple of resources to learn more. https://devopsdays.org/open-space-format/ (similar) https://leancoffee.org/ the best way to see the differences is to participate in them ๐
lean coffee you build an agenda then talk and BoF you just talk extemporaneously about a particular topic. i personally prefer the BoF chats
Interesting. So far I've only attended the BoF chats... and I have enjoyed them every time.
Who is reading a good book that others here might like (non-fiction or fiction)? Reply in thread.
Who is reading a good book that others here might like (non-fiction or fiction)? Reply in thread.
Personally I'm loving A Deadly Education by Naomi Novak. Her first book in a new series. Think a more sophisticated Harry Potter but the magical school is trying to kill you!
I'm enjoying The Scout Mindset (Why Some People See Things Clearly and Others Don't), by Julia Galef.
Currently reading โDriving DevOps with Value Stream Managementโ. Very interesting. Comprehensively brings together a lot of related concepts for VSM โฆ
Never Split the Difference.. such a good listen so far!
Fall (or Dodge in Hell) by Neal Stephenson. mind blown
I'm about halfway through Toyota Kata by Mike Rother and it's changed the way I think about continuous improvement and basically a large chunk of lean principles in general. Audiobook isn't bad but having the physical copy for the graphics really help. Also about halfway through Engineering The Digital Transformation by Gary Gruver. Pretty confident this one's going to become my new recommended how-to guide for engineering management.
@tom.wojtusik: I just learned about The Scout Mindset via Scott Alexander. Sounds good!
